President's Message
There will be no general club meeting in Freedom Hall in June or
July.
As the summer approaches many of us will be leaving town on trips or
going to summer homes in cooler locales. As you travel it’s easy to stay
connected via the Internet. Virtually every Internet provider gives
users the option to log into their e-mail accounts using a web browser.
Thus, while travelling you can visit an Internet café or bring your
laptop or netbook computer and connect either in your hotel or at a
friend’s / relative’s house. However, you will need to know your login
information, including your password. Also you may need to bring a copy
of needed e-mail addresses, if you don’t normally use a browser for
accessing your e-mail.
If you are unsure what a netbook is, they are small, portable, basic
computers with no CD / DVD drive that are fine for using the Internet
and basic computing. They are not very powerful but are quite
inexpensive.
While using public networks, be especially sure to practice safe
computing. If using your own computer, be sure that your security
software (including firewall) is turned on and is up to date and that
your security settings are adequate. Also if you are on a public
computer it is wise to avoid logging into banking and investment sites,
if at all possible. Also be sure to completely log out of your e-mail
account when finished.
While traveling, it is fun to bring along your digital camera.
Besides having extra batteries and an extra memory card for your camera,
consider backing your pictures up to your computer periodically. Note
you may need to bring either the camera’s computer cable or a small card
reader with you. If you don’t bring a laptop, you can still back your
pictures up to a flash / thumb drive, using your friend’s computer. If
you need help planning what you need, check with the Computer Club –
we’re here to help you!
Lastly, don’t forget necessary chargers for computers, cameras, and
cell phones!

The SCA Computer Club has installed security cameras and
software in both the Computer Room and the Computer Lab. Now you will be
able to tell if there is a class going on and which room is open. Thanks
